At Life, Inc., our Students for LIFE program is proud to partner with Project SEARCH, an innovative program that helps provide people with disabilities the opportunity to gain work experience through internships. One of their key success stories comes from Chris Turner, the Director of Food and Nutrition for the Saint Joseph/Candler Health System, who has seen firsthand the benefits of this partnership.
Chris Turner shares, “I have never worked with Project SEARCH prior to joining this team. I can honestly say that it has been one of the best experiences that I’ve had during my career in healthcare. Project SEARCH has given my team and I the opportunity to work with some great people.” Over the past two years, several Project SEARCH interns have contributed to his department’s success. Four of these interns were so successful in their roles that they have since joined the team as full-time associates.
Hiring individuals with disabilities brings a wealth of benefits to organizations. As Turner noted, these interns not only bring a fresh perspective but also contribute to the overall development of the team. He emphasized that the Project SEARCH program allows staff to share their skills and knowledge with people who are eager to learn, ultimately fostering an environment of growth and collaboration.
This partnership highlights the immense value that individuals with disabilities bring to the workforce—dedication, a strong willingness to learn, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to their teams. Organizations like Saint Joseph/Candler Health System and programs like Project SEARCH are proving that inclusivity is not only the right thing to do but also a powerful strategy for success.
