FrancesMarch 5, 2020Events / News - Savannah / Uncategorizedhttps://www.wsav.com/news/your-local-election-hq/secure-the-vote-hosts-workshop-to-ensure-voter-accessibility/ Thank you to the Secretary of State for sending a voting machine to LIFE to allow us to demo it for consumers, and to Sharyl Sutton for her instruction around it’s usage. Terrific job by LIFE staff, especially Denise Howard who was instrumental in setting this up, and Board members, especially Barry Helmey who participated in the event (and makes a video cameo), for supporting the effort to help make this a successful demonstration of the voting machines. Most importantly, LIFE’s consumers provided important insights into potential issues, thereby educating the Elections Board in advance of the election to allow… [...]Read more...

November 20, 2014Roy had an interesting dilemma. He was in the process of obtaining a power scooter that he so desperately needed; but before doing so had to first show that he had a ramp at his mobile home that would allow him to enter and exit his home safely. Through a collaborative effort with the United Way of Effingham and GAP Ministries, LIFE was able to help build Roy his wheelchair ramp. Soon after, Roy received his scooter. Roy has been enjoying the outdoors a lot more ever since! “Everything just came together beautifully!” said Mark Swift, LIFE’s Home Modification Coordinator…. [...]Read more...
October 6, 2009Dear LIFE staff, Before I got the ramp, I couldn’t go outside, I couldn’t go to the grocery store, I couldn’t go to the library, I couldn’t go to church, I couldn’t go anywhere! I was totally housebound unless I paid someone to get me in and out of the house. I have 5 high, steep steps leading to my mobile home. I couldn’t get up the steps without help. My knees have no cartilage, so walking is extremely difficult and painful. I sometimes had to crawl up the steps. I couldn’t afford to pay for a ramp myself. My… [...]Read more...
October 6, 2009Dear LIFE staff, Before the ramp was built, there was just a sidewalk in its place. My daughter, B., had a seizure, fell, and bumped her head. But now that we have the ramp, it is safer for her to move around. She can hold on and not fall and hurt herself. It has been very helpful. B. enjoys being able to get out. Usually, she stays inside. It is so much easier for her to get out. For the first time, B. and her grandfather were able to have a weekend out together. Her grandfather is in a wheelchair,… [...]Read more...
